If I translated the question correctly he means what was *missing* from the Marvel trade... and that would be all the additional content in Issue #1 (ie, the Back-up story, "Hot Potato", and the dossier files and blueprints).

And the answer is no. The IDW release is a straight-up reprint of the Marvel Trade Paperback series, including no additional content, no corrections/improvements to the material, excluding a removal of all Marvel copyright info and symbols.

At this point, it looks like they'll be rereleasing all 5 Marvel trades unchanged, and will begin their own collections (with the bells and whistles promised in their press releases and such) once those 5 book have been issued.

I liked the 1st issue, it wasn't great but a joe comic that's pretty good is better than none at all. I really like Atkins art too so that's a real plus, Tim

I finally got it, and while it's not a bad read, it's not what I hoped for. Of course it is just the first issue. I'll give it some time and see how it goes, but the little things such as Dial Tone make me wonder. I guess we'll see soon. By the 5th issue I'll know for sure how I'll like the series.

The one that's the real sack-tap is having to get Heavy Duty and not Roadblock. God help their letters editor if they make Heavy Duty rhyme.

According to episode 22 of the GI Joe Review podcast's interview with IDW GI Joe editor Andy Schmidt, she-Dialtone was originally going to be an original character but Hasbro argued that there are so many Joes occupying so many functions, original characters should only be added when they fill a new need. So they made this new character Dialtone, using the reboot logic that at least one male has to become female.

I don't know, I'd rather see an obscure character like Bullhorn show up when the situation calls for it than get a new character taking away page space from the existing Joes. In the case of Dialtone, the art was already done for the issue so it was either make her one of the existing female characters and make it seem like maybe they didn't know how to use that character, or go all out and make her an existing Joe that's clearly a new take on the character.

If that's the case then why didn't they make her Bombstrike. The look is very similar and her specialties as a forward air controller and in counterintelligence would be a good fit for working alongside Scarlett in the command center.

Honestly for an issue that doesn't have a whole lot going on it caught my interest. They probably should have gone the doublesized issue direction and given us a bit more story to chew on and hook new readers. If I wasn't a Joe fan and picked this up I don't know that there is enough there to bring me back for issue 2.

Oh and I think they are doing just fine with carrying on the spirit of the characters. Duke came off a bit like a pretty boy douche so at least they got that right ;)

Plus, Andy in the interview made it sound like Hasbro was who suggested which Comms person to use for the already-drawn character, once it was certain that it wouldn't be a new codename.

As for Marvin, we're just going to have to get used to the fact that somewhere out there, someone has copyrighted "Roadblock" and Hasbro can't get that owner to sell them back the name.

From what I can tell, it has nothing to do with the copyright. See the Combat Hero Roadblock still on shelves.

I blame JvC, Sigma 6, and the movie.

Yeah it's not a copyright thing. Not only the Combat Hero figure, but the 25th ann versions that came out too. Somewhere in the ideas of putting figures out, someone just prefers Heavy Duty over Roadblock. Well they like items of Roadblock's personality but they want Heavy Duty. I don't get it, but I don't think it'll ever be explained. Maybe someone at the next convention can rattle it out of Hasbro.

I'm not a copyright lawyer or any kind of lawyer for that matter. All I know is that when Devil's Due was publishing the GI Joe comic, they were using Roadblock, name and all, even though Hasbro couldn't make figures named Roadblock, and now IDW's editor has said that Hasbro told them they don't have the copyright to use the name Roadblock in the comics even though they are currently able to release figures named Roadblock.

We can speculate on why that is and we may even be right. But we may not be right.

I just saw the re-shipped carded Roadblock from the 5-pack on the pegs at Target today. Scarlett, Gung-Ho, Roadblock, and Storm Shadow from the original GIJoe and Cobra sets are shipping (yet again) now on non-25th cards, as well as the aforementioned Combat Heroes Roadblock vs Cobra Commander sets.

yeah, it can't be a copyright thing. I can't begin to imagine what the reason actually is for the continued amalgamation of the characters but it's apparently not a legal issue over the word "Roadblock"
