Post subject: What's left for the 25/30/50th line?

The 50th Anniversary stuff is rolling out soon and with it comes a point of reflection: I don't see many 82-86 figures left to be done.

Now, I'm fanboy enough that if Hasbro hired Boss Fight to remake the updates we've gotten to the level of 30th Airtight for the next 10 years I'd be in.

But realistically, I don't think there's much left to be done at retail.

The club seems to be doing a fine job of filling in gaps from 1987 on and with the tooling warchest Hasbro has I think we'll eventually get a full line up of great Boss Fight figures from them that fill in most of the gaps between 87-94.

I don't think those later designs have much of a chance at general retail. But I do think one last hurrah of 80s nostalgia could squeak by in the marketplace. So I was wondering: what's left?

It basically comes down to two 5 packs. Here's my unsolicited pitch for a final victory lap from Hasbro.

Joe
1982 Scarlett -- I don't think this needs to be a 100% new sculpt. The Resolute mold would get very close if the shorter shins from Helix were used and you topped it with a new head. That said, new sculpt Gung-Ho treatment would be very welcome.

1983 Gung-Ho, Duke -- We've seen Gung-Ho. I'm sure a satisfyingly 80s Duke could be cobbled together with the parts available.

1984 Roadblock -- with the Retaliation tooling on hand, this would be incredibly easy to do. New head, tops.

1986 Mainframe -- I put together a pretty decent LBC of this guy. Boss Fight could easily knock him out of the park. The Falcon head works great for Mainframe, he just needs a new helmet. The rest of the parts are on file.

If Mainframe's too far off the beaten path, throw in Ultimate Snake Eyes with the vintage accurate head instead. Give him a backpack, too.

Cobra
Zartan and the three original Dreadnoks. Buzzer holds up pretty well, but he was hard to find. Repaint him. The other three are woefully dated. The concept case Zartan is a perfect mix of nostalgia and update (no more bare midriff). But the head sculpts from Ripper and Torch are pretty nice. I think these guys could be put together with a little bit of new web gear.

The box-set capper? A 100 percent new-sculpt Serpentor.

I think both of these have enough broad fan appeal (they're packed with names like the original 25th box sets were) that they would sell fine at Toys R Us. And they're devoid of troop builders so the sell-through rate would allow for them to be ordered as a pair.

After that, Hasbro can reboot the brand all they want. I'll be a happy old timer (so long as the Club keeps turning out the hits).

What do you guys think?

I think in terms of what the *masses* would buy, I think they are about out of choices besides new recipes for old 25th. I mean, they could always complete 88-92, but I'm not sure those would be viable. Cool to see, and I'd love to get them, but I'm not sure it'd do well. (I'm thinking about the marauders set here, and even the Dreadnoks... Still in stock on clearance at bbts years after they were released).

I'd still really like to get a dedicated sculpt for the Viper w/o the stupid separate helmet and chromed head. All-new buck with the 'presence' of the RAH fig that's been missing from all the 25A+ versions, with a removable one-piece helmet and a Trooper head underneath.

Then all the rest of the Specialty-Vipers.

If they're gonna do Concept Case Zartan they're going to have to swap out the Resolute Duke chest with a different one so the chest armor fits properly. The asymetrical collar really messes the fit.

That's exactly my point Bucky. I loved the 87-94 line but remakes from that era seem to underperform. It's likely because the market saturation post Sunbow wasn't as great.

Luckily, the club seems game to fill in those holes. I think Hasbro has very few Ultimate 80s releases left to do.

Since the project seems so small, I hope Hasbro decides to do something along these lines.

I would buy a set with ultimate anyone really, Duke,Roadblock, and Gung Ho all their 25s where... lacking.
If Hasbro did runs of say 15 figures a year at 15 bucks a pop, all "ultimate" and all pre-orderable they would get so much of my money.

Really they could do it with tooling they already have, with a few new heads and gear. I'd re-buy tons of figures I already have 25th versions of, and wouldn't bat an eye.

I kinda prefer the ROC and POC-style reimaginings. I seriously dig ROC Roadblock way more than the 84 look.

Although admittedly if they do the wilder, not-grounded-much-in-military-realism and colorful figures, sometimes I'd rather keep the zany classics.
Like the Mega-Viper. That thing needs to keep its armor and spider-webbed suit intact and pink and yellow.

new improved scarlett and noks would make me happy. but I only have an interest if they are the original figure look, I don't care about modernizing their look. also I still want a covergirl based on the original figure.

Duke should definitely get a 50th Ultimate figure. They could use most of 50th Flint to get there.

Concept case Gung Ho and a proper, non-anime looking classic Scarlett would be great, too. Make Duke and Scarlett part of an outmatched three-pack with a new Serpentor or lab coat Mindbender. Put Gung Ho in another with those two Dreadnoks mentioned above.

What I'd really like to see would be a five pack that gives us Breaker, Rock n Roll, Zap, Clutch and Steeler, all using 30th or later parts. They could get more mileage out of the 30th Stalker/Poc Snake Eyes/Retaliation Beachhead mold for most of them. Recolor the Con Exclusive Night Force Steeler. It would really fill a gap in that original line up.

Basically an ultimate version of all OG13.
Snake Eyes has been done, 12 more to go.

I'm with Tsunami on Star Brigade, but I'd actually like to see the Lunartix and the BAAT. Not exactly expecting them anytime soon, though.

And there's always the next movie(s).

It's a travesty that Brawler hasn't gotten a modern era figure.
