Exactly. The burning need to have any new Joe stuff is just gone. The prices are too high and availability is piss poor, due to either Hasbro's bumbling (the Dollar General figures) or Master Collector's greed ($600 on eBay for the new convention set?!).

Any figures that I can't outright find just become inspiration to make a custom.

Honestly...The issue with the DG figures is that Collectors are too impatient. I've recently seen Dollar Generals start to put up a Peg with a price tag for these figures... That means Stores will stock them, be able to order them, and collectors will know which stores will have them...rather than the crap shoot we've dealt with till now. Yes, everybody was excited for the figures, and want's them now...people who are patient will end up getting their fill of these figures at retail prices.

I have to say that Hasbro, SDCC and the GIJCC have had a lot to do with me getting out of the "Got to have it!" frame of mind. Distribution, very desirable figures at extortionate prices and/or almost impossible to get and scalper prices on Ebay and other places have persuaded me that if I can't have it for a reasonable price, I don't want it.

And if you can't trust the world's biggest Crystal Ball fan for what the future holds, who can you trust? :hypnoshield:

Really I want to talk about the gotta have it mentality in collecting. Who has it? How bad? Why?
Hmm...

Who has it? I guess I do, to a degree.
How bad? Depends on the character.
Why? A lot of it has to do with characters that I have wanted, in a particular scale, for a very long time.

I mostly only have the "gotta have it" mentality with MU anymore. I will pay twice retail price to get the ones I want and sometimes more depending on the character. I do have limits though. When MU Professor X was going for $100 I never even considered it. When he dropped to $50 I thought about it, for about 2 minutes, before I decided that it was more than I wanted to pay for the figure. When I saw one for $36 and free shipping, I jumped on it. I most certainly would not do this for very many figures at all, but the X-Men were always my favorite comic book team, and I really wanted to have him as part of my collection.

Another example would be the Hot Toys Aliens vs. Marines snap-kits.
I spent a great deal of money getting those when they came out. But then again, Aliens has been my favorite movie since I saw it in the theater back in '86. I waited about 20 years for those figures to come out, so I wasn't going to miss my chance to get my fill of them. Not once have I regretted it either.

Of course at no time would I ever spend more than I have available in disposable income. Bills and such come first, period.

With the bad distribution of the recent years, I got kinda used to the comic shop prices or to ordering some stuff online.
I don't mind paying a few bucks more to be sure I can add a certain figure to my collection, but I'll never compromise paying the bills or buying groceries just so I can buy toys, that's just ridiculous.

That's why I love about Playmobil, the catalog says when this or that theme will be available and they stick to schedule which is pretty cool.
So I don't have to pay double the price to order them from Germany to get them right now, I can just wait a few months and buy them locally.
With their reliable distribution, I know I will be able to get what I want.
