Just wondering what everyone else does with MOC or MIB items that have some sort of battery operated device in them (e.g. the cobra and gi joe sound boxes that came with the 25th 5 packs). I don't want to open the ones I've got, but am concerned that one day the batteries will eventually start to leak.
What're your takes on this?

Someone asked this question in Star Wars Insider. There are vehicles that have temporary batteries in them like the Night Attack Chopper and a few others especially from the VvV and Spy Troops lines. I think the advice was that as long as you keep the item in a cool, dry place, you should do OK.

I could be talking out my ass too.

Anybody remember seeing Sonic Fighters figures ON THE SHELVES where the back of the card had been cut to replace the batteries? I saw plenty of these back then.

Someone asked this in Toyfare several years ago. There have been incidents where the acid leaked and damaged the card but for the most part the batteries are so small and contain so little acid in those little watch batteries that it is very rare to see. But it is possible.

It can happen and as a MOC/MIB collector it has happened to me. I've had plenty of figures that has never actually had any problems with battery acid. They seem fine. I've got several right now that I don't see a problem. The batteries are dead, but I see no acid. Now I have had some Star Trek items where I've seen damage. It never looks like the toy it's self is really damaged actually, but you see visible proof that if you open the cover it'll be messed up in there. It can be cleaned up and new batteries put in most of the time.

So the answer is, most people just take their chances. There are collectors that will pass on electronic stuff for their collection, or those are the only items they'll open. I know some people have opened box items to take the batteries out and resealed the tape. If anyone could ever figure out a way to release the glue on blister packs, you'll probably see the same done with those.
