The comic pack would probably work better as an example of failing to tell a story visually. There's virtually no cohesion to the narrative aside from the repetition of the original story. Where it attempts to change perspective and follow different characters, it does not aid the story nor give us any extra insight into those characters.
I'll agree the comic pack isn't a cohesive story. But I whole heartily disagree that it doesn't aid the original story. According to Larry Hama, the comic pack was supposed to be a deleted scenes kind of thing where it showed what happened between the pages of the original story. By itself it isn't that great, but as addition I think it is kind of cool.
During Hama's panel by panel break down of the story at the Convention in Atlanta, he sowed some really cool things. Like how the shape of a window from outside the castle showed where inside the castle Destro was sitting playing chess. Or how from the outset of the story he didn't know where the characters were headed and that he hadn't outlined the relationships between Destro and the Baroness or Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow until he got to those parts in the story. He laid the foundation for a lot of characterization and connections in this one story.
