This looked like a vehicle from on of the old classic Joe comic covers with Hawk, Destro, and Cobra Commander. But I forgot what issue it was.

Cool concept though.

Hmmm, interesting. Inspiration for the HISS? Not sure. It's not QUITE close enough for me to think that it was, but certainly there are some similarities. Cool vehicle regardless, and would've worked in either Star Wars or G.I.Joe.

Perfect cross-over toy, make it and throw one in a Joe paint job, and a Star Wars paint job and you have Profit.

It's possible that someone who may have jumped ship from Kenner to Hasbro may have brought shades of that idea with them. Otherwise this thing should have been tightly under wraps in Kenner's R&D department in '80/'81/'82 when it was developed.

I've long considered the Micronauts Terraphant to be a more direct inspiration for the HISS, especially when one takes Wayne Luther's early HISS concept art into consideration. Still, there's no denying a a striking resemblance there...

Wasn't the HISS built entirely out of parts of another model kit?
I seem to recall hearing this somewhere.

Ooooh, yeah, need to remember that back then, Hasbro and Kenner were two entirely different companies,

I don't know about the HISS being built from a model kit, but I do know that the larger section of the barrels to the HAL were identical to the engine sections of the X-Wing model kit available at the time. :shifty:

Hasbro was...good at that sort of thing. There are bits from Tamiya 1/35 armor kits on the MOBAT and other early vehicles. And of course, the "claw" attachment for the S.N.A.K.E. armor was lifted directly from the Zoids Garius kit. :shifty:
