The only comic appearance the character had before Declassified was the blocked image from issue #1. http://gijoe.wikia.com/wiki/File:MC001_03.jpg

However the character was a nod to then Marvel editor Jim Shooter. Here's an younger version picture of him.

In GI Joe Declassified it was revealed that Shooter was a black female who watched over the young team. I can't find a good picture of that version.

Some people I talked to over the years have stated his MOS as sharpshooter and secondary as combat journalism though I have never seen concrete evidence to this. Most people agree that Shooter was a player before the team was around so most people tend to make him older and as someone whose reputation precedes them

Of course, all of that is made up fan-fic material. No matter what's "agreed" on, fans conjured it all out of the air, it never existed in the comics. The name was, as mentioned above, a mere nod to Jim Shooter, the EIC of Marvel at the time.

The only official version of Shooter is the female sniper retconned into the Pre-Marvel timeline by the G.I.Joe Declassified miniseries. To the Original Poster, that's gonna be your best source for visuals on the character. It's helpful that it's easily one of the best and most entertaining of the material DDP put out in their 7 years of output.

Yeah, I made me a Shooter back before Declassified and had to rename him Shooter Two.

Declassified is the best Joe comic experience I've had since I was a kid.

Umm, since there was a (partial) picture of Shooter published in the original "official" comics, then wouldn't that make him an "official" version? There may not have been much, if any, info given for him, but the white male version most certainly did exist.

Just because DDP made a comic 20 some years later with their own version of a little known character, doesn't mean the original never existed, or wasn't the inspiration (at least in name) for the later, DDP version.

Just my 2 cents...

To be fair there isn't enough of the person showing to determine with any accuracy that the character was both male and caucasian. Maybe male because there appears to be a beard on the character, but that might also be Spark's knuckle hair or whoever was pointing in that picture.

I can't even guess at race. He could be middle eastern. He could be Japanese, Chinese, Korean, etc. Maybe Spanish.

We only have a snippet of a picture and knowledge of who it was supposed to be a nod towards. Its very difficult to say one way or the other based on that picture alone what the character is officially supposed to be. The only visual depiction of the character that clearly defines the what the character looks like is the Declassified story.

Valid points, but it could also be said that if it was specifically stated that the character was based on Jim Shooter, as a nod to the EIC, then it kind of "fills in" a lot of the blanks left by the obscured picture, by knowing their intentions for the character.

It does appear that the person on the screen has the same flesh tone as Sparks and the pictures of the other caucasian members on the screen (as you can see his right eye and surrounding skin). While you are correct, that the coloring alone can't really rule out certain other nationalities, I would say it is pretty clear that (this specific) Shooter was not African-American.

I will say this,
An MSN image search for "gi joe declassified shooter" sure brought up some odd images, including an Elvis DVD, and a Johnny Quest picture :rotfl:
