Hey, guys...if anyone is interested, I had a chance to talk to past G.I. Joe writer Brandon Jerwa and posted it on GeneralsJoes...

Check it out, he's got some very cool insight into his past comic book adventures and the current state of G.I. Joe!

I was extremely flattered to see a Wraith figure produced, but I’m a little disappointed that I wasn’t asked to write the file card. A little more disappointing is the fact that I had to buy a Wraith figure just like everyone else, and it really took some work to get that one!

I have a regular Wraith figure, still on the card because I’m afraid to open it for fear of never finding another. My 9-year-old son is dying to have one of his own to play with, but until we find another I won’t take the chance. The sad capper to this story comes in the form of a Christmas present: my mother-in-law bought me a mint-on-card stealth variant from an Internet dealer (I’m sure she paid a pretty penny). I was appreciative and kind of depressed at the same time. I don’t expect special treatment or anything, but come on – is it too much to think that a case of Wraith figures might make its way to the guy who created the character? Sigh.
I read a story once that Jack Kirby couldn't walk down an action figure isle without getting upset because all he saw were all the characters he created and wasn't seeing one cent from them. Someone else was profiting from a universe of characters he helped create. If the man can do that to the king of comics, it doesn't surprise me they wouldn't hook Jerwa up either.

Yea, but it seems like this era's corporate wahoos are far more sensitive about creator's rights and what not than they were back in the silver age. It doesn't suprise me he wasn't provided a figure, but it does suprise me they didn't consult him on the file card.

And if I had ever bought a Writh figure for myself, I would happily be donating it to the guy for his kid to play with.

Wonder what Kirby would've thought of the Kirby-styled "New Gods" figures from DC Direct... :-/

Yeah, if I ever see another Wraith, I'd be inclined to get it for Jerwa's kid. Of course after that interview, he'll probably receive a number of them -- I hope.

I sympathize with him.

I've never seen a Wraith figure, myself. Or Matt Trakker. Or a BAT... or... or...

On the other hand, there are FOURTEEN of those ugly Pilot Scarlett figures at my local Target - you know, the ones that everyone was sooooo excited about, because it's "Glenda," right?

Anyway, great interview, Justin. And great analogy on Jerwa's part there.

Great interview. And yeah it does suck about Wraith, I keep seeing one at a Target though, but have never seen a variant one. Anyway, I just realized that Hasbro has now given us "two" (3 if you count red ninja in place of satan) Argentinian figures to only the Gaucho repaint of Gung Ho. Where's my red jackal & red laser?!? :( At this rate we're going to get Chinese Major Bludd or Fumbles first..

Wasn't the Red Jackal Destro in the Target UBP?

Thats funny all I see is resolute Dukes and TF Dukes...

It is always cool to hear someone talk about their creative prospects as someone who tries to write myself I have the utmost respect for them.

PS I also have never seen a wraith figure in real life.

Steve

Great interview.

I've always said that I felt that Blaylock kept Jerwa on a short leash, especially when it became obvious that Jerwa was a better writer. The interview pretty much cements my viewpoint now.
