Same here for me. The Defiant is for exactly that purpose and Payload and Space Shot are the shuttl pilots.
my 'verse has plenty of sci-fi but almost all of it is based around Serpentor, absolutely none of it invovles space wars or intergalactic adventures.
Basically, Payload is the somewhat younger of the 2 astronauts who lives for the job but has ;about a decade of Air Force duties and shuttle missions under his belt... OTOH Space Shot is older and getting crabby as he's considering retirement after almost 20 years in the service Earthly studies of space and he knows he'll miss flying. He's not even in the Air Force, he's a NASA employee who's been tasked out to join GIJoe because the Pentagon knew he was the BEST pilot in NASA and they decided one military and one civilian shuttle pilot would provide some needed balance on flight missions, both routine and Intelligence purposes.
