I've been whittling down my Joe collection. Getting rid of a lot of my ARAH stuff. And trying to make a more "realistic" team when I decide what I save/keep.

Going with a Special Forces unit's primary missions being: unconventional warfare, foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, direct action, and counter-terrorism . . .

What specialties would be on the team? What vehicles would they use?

Because I was thinking, do SEALs go in with a MBT? Does a Marine Recon team have a firefighter on missions?

Pilots, air support, transportation are required of course. But they would be secondary to the main anti-terrorist team.

So, in composing a 12 man team . . . culled from all the branches, what specialties would you want on it out in the field? Who would you pick?

very interesting question!

well,.. in choosing my own 12 man units in my own joeverse, I ususally break them down like this:

4 "shooters" (consisting of Infantry, heavy machine gunner or Snipers)

4 Special forces (consisting of trackers, L.R.R.P., demolitions, SEALS, or one of the "snake eys'")

4 Specialists ( Computer/ communications expert , Medic, Heavy weapons expert, and the last depending on the mission)

specific members are usually back at the HQ. Breaker, Sparks, Dial-Tone, and Mainframe are the Control room personnel, Doc commands the medical teams, Barbecue and Tollbooth are in charge of Engineering and Damage control, while Law is chief of security.

Are you doing the same with Cobra?

I have to ask because I read that and just got the funny image of a bunch of real world soldiers charging into battle only to stop dead in their tracks when they see the other army is full of robots, genetic freaks, and gravity defying ninjas.

I'm not saying it's a bad image, mind you.

I remember this being brought up on the Pit several years ago. I tend to break my guys up into 5-man fire teams teams since that's all the Tomahawk can carry. If the mission calls for more manpower, 2 fire teams are combined to form a squad.

Team 1:
Team Leader: Stalker - right rank (in '82), has the right training, can double as a medic, and in the comics was an RTO in Vietnam, so he knows how to operate any equipment the team is likely to use
Recoil - RTO
Roadblock - heavy gunner
Ripcord
Big Ben

Team 2:
Team Leader: Wet Suit
Beachhead
Dial Tone - RTO
Repeater - heavy gunner
Falcon - I know he's too high ranked to be used in this role, but the figure's cool and it's my universe :-D

Snipers/Recon:
Low Light
Ambush

Support:
Wild Bill - helicopter pilot
Lift Ticker - same
Airborne - Dragonfly gunner
Breaker - base RTO
Mainframe - base RTO & specialist field tech
Duke - GI Joe 1st sgt.
Hawk - CO
Doc - team doctor
Clutch - driver
Outback - instructor

Specialist Roles:
Airtight
Alpine
Lightfoot
Recondo - jungles
Iceberg - (ant)arctic
Dusty - desert

heres a question:

No love for the New sculpts?

Crosshairs and New sculpt Spirit would fit well with the snipers.

Actually, yeah.

I'm going to eliminate a lot of the "specialty" vipers, no genetic manipulation . . . androids I'm okay with . . . on a limited scale. They do have some advanced weaponry due to MARS, but for the most part I want them to be more -- "grassroots."

Assuming you're talking to me, I hate the new sculpts as far as playability goes.

I am going to leave the last post and apologize for my lack of sticking on topic:
If I was only to have a dozen feild agents I would have

3 Assault specialists (Duke, Big Ben, Beachhead, Gung Ho )
1 tracker (Spirit, Dart)
1 EOD (Stalke, Tripwire )
1 Medic (LT Falcon, Lifeline etc)
1 Driver (Clutch, Crankcase)
1 RTO ( Breaker, Dialtone etc)
1 Marksman ( Lowlight )
1 Machine Gunner (RnR or RB)
1 cross trained Naval specialist ( Shipwreck, Torpedo)
1 Heavy Weapons ( Salvo, Backblast, Zap, Bazzoka)

in the wings:
1 Doctor: Doc
1 Helo Pilot: Wild Bill
1 Fixed wing Pilot: Ace
1 armor crew: Steeler, Heavy Metal, Cross Country
1 base communication: Sparks
1 Intelligence: Scarlett
1 Engineer: Tollbooth
1 Commanding officer: Hawk, Colton, austin
The rest would be specialists on retainer ( Call in as needed)

I have a 12 man "A-Team" that is broken into two units and sometimes 3 or 4 depending on mission type.

Claymore - Commander (Infantry, Special Ops)
Falcon - XO (Team 2 Commander) (Infantry, Medic)
Stalker - Sgt. Mgr. (Infantry, EOD)
Beachhead - 1st Sgt. (Infantry, Small Arms)
Recoil - Sgt. (Infantry, Communications)
Sneak Peak - Sgt. (Infantry, Communications)
Tunnel Rat - Sgt. (Infantry, EOD)
Repeater - Sgt. (Infantry, Heavy Weapons)
Roadblock - Sgt. (Infantry, Heavy Weapons)
Lifeline - Sgt. (Infantry, Medic)
Flash - Sgt. (Infantry, Electronics)
Low Light - Sgt. (Infantry, Sniper)

Well you could go Unit style with 3 four man squads. Specialists could be added as mission requirements dictate.

Lt. Falcon would be in charge of the 12 man A-team, reporting to Hawk.
You could use Flint or Duke as Falcon's aide/deputy. Falcon as overall team leader would be on the team with the hardest objective.

Stalker (squad leader)
Low Light
Ripcord
Tunnel Rat

Duke (squad leader)
Rock N Roll
Airborne
Recoil

Beachhead (squad leader)
Grunt
Recondo
Snake Eyes

I tried to go with all shooters for the "A-Team".

But you could easily have a Naval Squad for sea-based operations.
Lt. Torpedo (Team Leader)
Wet Suit
Gung-Ho
Leatherneck

You could also use Lt. Torpedo as a Co-Commander with Falcon (Or promote Falcon) if you wanted more integrated teams.
Don't forget you can have a heavy weapons/support section. Its all up to you. Figure 20 combat types. 5 Intel/Command types (Hawk, Scarlet, Doc, Breaker, Mainframe) 5 Pilots/Drivers (Clutch, Ace, Cutter, Lift-Ticket, Steeler). That should be around 30-35 figs total.

You'd want Lift-Ticket over Wild Bill, because you'd want a transport helo. And as the Tomahawk is configured as an armed transport it can fill two roles at once: air support/transport.
Ground Transport you'd want an Awe Striker simply because it can carry your whole squad. Usually anti-terror teams don't have their own armor.
Sea Insertion would be the Whale or 2 Devil Fish (repainted bright orange aint covert) or the PTE Naval set (if you don't mind non-joe toys)

I have such a team made up from custom characters.

Joe wise I'd go for the 3 3 men assault teams

Duke
Roadblock
Tunnel Rat

Flint
Lowlight
Snake Eyes (as commando for realism sake)

Torpedo
Wetsuit
Shipwreck

and Lift-Ticket, Doc and Breaker aboard the bird.
