Since it's a short week, I went with a profile of a figure that has a lot of flaws. But, Tollbooth also has some value to a collection and he was a figure who, because of his vehicle, remained relevant in my collection for much longer than I would have thought.

I like old Tollbooth. I characterize him like the side characters you see in the old movies. Salty and gruff, but a good guy when it really matters.

Yeah he doesn't use the legs for certain. However the lower left arm (the one with the watch) could possibly be the same. There's all sorts of peice reusing that isn't mentioned (Duke, Spirit and Doc all have the same back torso peice for example)

Nice review of Tollbooth, the fact you mentioned his open shirt, finally made it click for why I don't like the figure very much

I've always liked Tollbooth. Nice to see him get spotlighted.

I was impressed by how often the Bridge Layer was used in the Sunbow series, and Tollbooth with it. Of course Tollbooth just sounded like Duke with a deeper voice, but he still had more lines than Thunder, Heavy Metal or Admiral Keel-Haul, characters whose vehicles could be incorporated more easily into storylines. Nope, every so often there would be a ditch or a chasm the Joes needed to cross. Thank goodness Tollbooth was on that mission to lend a bridge. Of course he didn't appear anywhere earlier in those episodes. And he didn't appear anywhere afterwards. But when they needed him, Tollbooth was there!

As a kid I didn't care for him. He wasn't bad but whenever I played with my friends they would try to create scenarios to use the bridge layer. I would always have Clutch or Rock n Roll simply drive around whatever obstacle they came up with. So neither Toolbooth or the Bridgelayer got much use back then.

As an adult I get the Bridgelayer and its purpose but it is still a rather boring toy. Toolbooth on the other hand is pretty important. He's the guy the Joes send in whenever moving one of their mobile bases somewhere. TTBP needs setting up or adding a Checkpoint somewhere or putting up permitter defenses, then Toolbooth is the guy you want doing it. He's one of those guys who can make a broken down beat up car run with no tools. When other kids were building forts little Toolbooth was building indestructable fortresses.

I dont think he uses Gung Hos legs or arms.

It looks VERY much as though that Steel Brigade Trooper is guilty of something... perhaps he tripped Slipstream then called the medics in while feigning ignorance about what actually happened.

Tollbooth is a favorite character of mine because I realized how much work would go into a prefab fortress and all the other little kitch play sets the joes have. I Have always felt the joes were woefully staffed in allot of areas Combat Engineering was one (Medics were another). Also the Sledge is an Awesome Accessory and his helmet always made him the king of support personnel.


I recently gave him his own sub groups uninspiredly called the "Builders" which include a Marine EOD/ Combat Engineer expert (Greaser), Navy Seabee (Hornet), Coast Guard steelworker (Bender), an Army Heavy Equipment Operator (Dozer) and Airforce Utilities Expert (Live Wire)

*BTW I would love Tollbooth to take out one of the Creepers with his Hammer, and then Snake Eyes to save his skin!

edit: Also, it's a pain how hard it is to keep that sledgehammer in mint condition since it's prone to stress marks along the handle. But that is one of the cooler, more unique, accessories in the line.

My only gripe with Tollbooth has only ever been that his helmet is safety orange. I've never seen a safety orange helmet in the field. Since he looks old, a shiny metallic or brown fiberglass helmet would have been appropriate.

I thought the bridgelayer was the stupidest thing I had ever seen until I was 19 and drove by the army corps of engeniers site beside the reserves base and saw a fleet of them.

TB was an enginer for me, I thought he worked well in the roll.
