With the group here being made up of a lot of creative guys, I am curious to hear opinions on the packages that Joes have been in lately. There is a lot of talk about contents, but I think that starting with the 25th, some of the packages have been pretty noteworthy as well. And I don't just mean art, but also construction of the package and overall effort.
The reason it is on my mind is because my brother just found me the new TRU 5-packs. Normally, I wouldn't be so impressed with a 5-pack that includes 4 identical figures, but the presentation of the CG set is greatly benefitted by its package. It still has some nice art and the painted background goes a long way to helping it mesh with the retro-look of the single carded figures. I was less impressed though with the Firefly/Greenshirts package. It wasn't quite as dynamic and I didn't realize that Firefly had all of his accessories in there until I opened it. So it didn't inspire me to buy the set as much as it could have if they had used the accessory window approach of the first 2 TRU 5-packs.
And these are improvements imo over the first 2 25th 5-packs. While those were far more rugged packages, they hinged upon the electronic gimmick. It was a great way to sing in the 25th anniversary, but not a lasting approach.
I also like the interior of the 2 Target vehicles. There is a lot of detail in there and I have to think that it would jump start a kids imagination if they get one. Generally, Joe collectors seem to want to build their vehicles. But I can certainly see an advantage in the toy aisle doing things this way.
I think that the way these are going is a big improvement over the uniform brand-identity packages that many toys are still using. I am sure that things will change in some way when the movie items arrive, and that is to be expected and will serve the purpose of the time. But I hope to see the current style around for a long time. What we have gotten has been great. I think that the paintings have even improved since the wave 1 single cards.
What have been some favorite packages or ones you haven't liked?
My only real criticism are examples where the package bends the figure. I had a terrible time getting the Legions 5-pack Storm Shadow out. And some comic pack legs ended up a bit warped. But since late 2007, I have had to take the time to enjoy each package before I open it. Then I keep them. And that is something that has (imo) been lost since 1997.
