Hulk Hogan brought up a point in my Blaze critiques thread that got me thinking.

Exactly why is it that most SM figures that you find have broken thumbs?

I dont think I have ever owned any of the SM figures other than Slaughter himself that didnt have at least one broken thumb.

Also is anyone aware of any other offshoot like Tiger, Night, or Ninja Force, Eco Warriors etc. that have similar issues?

Slaughter Marauder figures were created in Brazil, which if you have ever seen a Tiger Force Shipwreck or Airtight, you'd quickly see the fragileness of Brazilian figures.

I learned this from Mike T. a long while back, actually go check his forgotten figs on some of the Brazilian Air puorto guy or whoever it is.

To my knowledge the other subgroup figs were from China and quite sturdy.

Woah Hogan knows Joes!!!

Yeah Mike T covered the thumb breakage issue in one of his reviews (SM Mutt maybe?).

Was it because the molds were already in Brazil?

Balls in your court now, Hogan.

I'll take Willow for $100,000 Hulkster (my all-time favourite movie btw)

Correct sir.

Seriously though my knowledge in the SM subject is limited to what I posted earlier. My Joe collection is long gone, I just hang out here because I have no where else to go. ;-)

I could've sworn that Python Patrol and Tiger Force were also made in Brazil. Almost every TF Flint I've ever come across has cracked elbows. I do know that SM LowLight was produced outside of Brazil at one point. It took me a while, but I got one that was made in China. When you hold the 2 side-by-side, you can tell the Brazillian one is of lower quality.

Mike T SM Mutt review

Mike T wrote:
All of the Slaughters Marauders figures were actually manufactured and packaged in Brazil. The figures were made by Estrela under license from Hasbro for sale in the US. It is likely that Hasbro did this either as a cost cutting move, or simply because the molds for the figures they wanted to use were all located in Brazil and it was cheaper to have them produced there than it was to ship the molds to China. Since these figures are Estrela made, they are a great way for the modern collector to understand the differences between Brazilian made and Asian made Joe figures. All of the Slaughters Marauders are much more susceptible to crotch and thumb breakage since the plastic used in Brazil is harder and weaker than that used for the American and European Joes. You can see the effects of time on Slaughters Marauders figures as many of the samples you find today will feature broken parts...even when the rest of the figure is good condition...

When I took my Mutt out of storage to be photographed, I made a horrible discovery. When I touched Junkyard, the figure was slick. I have written previously about Brazilian soft plastics and their slow degradation over time. However, this is the first time I have experienced its occurrence after a figure was in my possession. I acquired this figure back in 2004. Since then, he has been stored in an acid-free plastic bag, inside a plastic tub, inside my house, in a dark closet. The figure has not been exposed to prolonged heat or light. When I first acquired the figure, the Junkyard was normal plastic and had no signs of decomposition. But, four years later, the dog is slick and Mutt's mask and Junkyard's leash are starting to soften quite a bit. It is an unfortunate side affect of the cheaper Brazilian plastic and something that is starting to occur on even figures that have been properly stored.

I find this type of thing on the "original" Python Patrol figures. I got the set of 6 brand new late in my Joe days (more interested in girls then), so all were mainly desplay and I think only moved a few times ever. Then when I pulled all my stuff out of storage, all but 2 figures (Officer and Tele-Viper) had cracks in both or one of their elbows. All my figures were in the same box and if you could see my 84 Copperhead, you could see him with a crack or two (been played with hard and put away wet), but my PP Copperhead looks like he was just opened yesterday except for the cracked eblows.

I got my Slaughters Marauders (all 6) around the same time, brand new too. Odd thing about this whole thing is my SM team looks fine, and I haven't noticed the breaking or stickyness problem. I did break the thumb to my SM Spirit getting him to hold his rifle right a few months after I got him though, but I found a replacement. He is now fine. Also my SM Footloose has a stress mark on his thumb, but those are the only problems I have ever had. I wonder what they are worth now, as I don't want to have my figures break down, if they are going.

When does this stickyness thing happen, and what is the best way to counter it? Thanks

momaw nadon
