So i don't think Hama created the whole "suspicion" element between the two because of that.
Since she was from Czechoslovakia that might make sense a little as it was invaded by the USSR, but still i don't know if Hama used that element of real history in the story.
Honestly, I never got that there was suspicion between the two. I got the impression way back in the day that Daina was an officer and Brekov treated her like one.
Given the era she was introduced in, I highly doubt the enlisted personnel would be given the opportunity to become a pilot. And be a sniper specialist.
Given our knowledge of history, one could see now how delicate the situation could be rif with distrust/mistrust from Brekov (towards Daina) and resentment (for invading) from Daina's perspective.
However, the filecards show that Brekov was an old warhorse. He's got the been there/done that. I think he was a professional doing the job he was supposed to do, and hoping/believing he was doing it for the right reasons.
The Oktober Guard is an elite unit. None of them would be part of the Guard unless they were the best available.
