This week's profile is of the 2006 Convention Overlord figure. Personally, I find this figure to be a great update to the character and one of the most significant modern upgrades that we've seen in recent years.

Overall I like this figure. It isn't a favorite by any means but I really like the battle armor concept MC was going for. First it fits the character which we really have had only a glimpse at media wise. They used the momentum DevilsDue gave the obscure character and gave him a purpose.

Mold wise I like the upper portion of the figure a lot. He looks regal yet battle ready which is what I expect of a Cobra general. Where this mold fails in my eyes is the lower half. It gives him a very squat and bulky appearance. I never took Overlord to be a lead form the front type of character so him being this heavily armored just doens't work and in fact takes away from what could have been an even better figure by giving him something more fitting a field general. I could have listed off a 100 different sets of legs that would have looked better than Baracades.

Accessories are another issue of contempt for me. The helmet works ok but it falls short when compared to the original. The origianl helmet made the weird looking guy with the mask, monocle, and receding hair line look a formidable villain. While MC did a good job using what was available I couldn't help but be slightly disappointed by not having the original again. The claws for the original Overlord never made sense to me back in the day so Storm Shadow's claw here makes just as little sense to me. I would have preferred they left it out entirely then try to give us an inadequate replacement for already odd accessory. The gun was a good choice though.

Overall I think it is a neat figure and I'm glad I got it. But I certainly wouldn't be going out of my way if had I missed adding it to the collection. I certainly don't see this figure ever costing more then it does right now.

Regarding the Overlord price you quoted... At the 2008 convention MC seemed to be parting out some of the 2006 Convention sets (if I had to speculate, I would hazard that either the Mortals had some kind of issue that compromised their ability to sell the 2006 sets whole, or that MC just had too many sitting around and wanted to blow them out).

You can also sometimes find Overlord on ebay listed as "OverloAd".

Good review. While I like the parts better for this version of Overlord, compared to his v1 figure, I could never get past the color pallet the club went with. If he had been done in a dark blue, I think that he might have liked him a little more.
