Personally I don't care what people think about me or my hobbies. I live my life to the best of my ability and do what I can to help others every chance I get.
If some anonymous internet user has a problem with what I do with my time and my money, I ain't losing any sleep over it.
Like wise I was always the cool gut growing up that everybody liked, picked first for kickball or basketball etc......but the whole time I was growing up I played with action figures and collected and customized till I was about 14. I used to take model paint make blood stains on my 12" Joe's or a dab on the corner of his mouth to make him look like he had been in a fight.
I used to tell my friends I couldn't come out because I was on punishment when I really just wanted to play with my action figures. So I don't care nor have I ever cared what people think about my hobbies, I just do me and they don't get it. Too bad they don't know what their missing out on. Customizing is great for relaxing and reducing the stress of being a "responsible adult"

Hey guys don't tell my wife I said that .....OK!?
