Gutshot served on board a hospital ship that patrolled the Philippian Sea as part of a civil relief squadron. He successfully treated a penetration wound in the back of a Navy SEAL whose team was providing security during a local narcotics enforcement raid. Impressed by the courage of the SEALs to endure unforeseen circumstances, Gutshot applied for BUD/s and was readily accepted after his Navy tour.

"Our Joes don't get hit often, but when they do, it's usually pretty bad. Gutshot has his work cut out for him however there's no one we'd rather have to patch us up and get us back into the fight."
