Everyone knows of the basic facts about the Toxo-Vipers and their "Leaky Suit Brigade"...
It is commonly known that Vipers who are troublemakers are assigned to the vicious "latrine-duty" as Toxo-Vipers to take care of all the toxic wastes that Cobra produces - and that the suits given to them are worthless for protection against the acidic sludge...
But there is one area of toxic waste where Cobra Commander is not stupid enough to take any chances - and that is around radioactive waste. He knows that if radioactive leftover are not disposed of according to all necessary safety protocols and procedures, they could in the end become extremely dangerous even to him - and that's where the duty of the Irradiators come in. Due to the worldwide demand of global dismantling of nuclear facilities, many radiation workers are left unemployed - and Cobra are quickly there to recruit them for their own cause. Because of the fact that their work is very important, the Irradiators suits and equipment are - quite opposite to the ordinary Toxo-Vipers - high standard and completely resistant to radiation as it can be.
The gear that Irradiators carry is not primarily designed to be weapons. The tanks on their backs contain special foam to clean off radioactive particles from a person or equipment that has been in contact within a 'hot' area and they have high-sensitive Geiger-meters to read the danger-levels. They also carry special transponders in their utility-pockets that are linked with the Cobra satellites that they fasten around an area that needs to be totally 'off limits' due to too high radiation levels.
Because of their important duty, the Irradiators have a high rank within the Cobra legions - especially within the Toxo-Viper division where they outrank everybody, even Cesspool, much to his displeasure. And should there be a nuclear disaster during a Cobra operation, they have the right to completely take charge in order to get all Cobra personal to safety. This makes the Irradiators cocky, and if they are not careful, they might find themselves being thrown into a vat of toxic sludge by the other jealous Vipers, and then their important knowledge of radiation won't matter. The Toxo-Vipers would gladly take the severe punishment that would follow as they feel it was worth it all to teach those arrogant 'experts' a lesson they wouldn't forget.
Personal comments:
That does not mean that I am in any way defending or supporting the terrorist groups we have trouble with in our real world. They are not to be recognized as nations, and they must of course be vanquished.
