When the original Doc died, his son Steven decided that when he grew up, he would honor his father by joining the military and becoming a medic. In the military he was stationed in Iraq where he put his talents to good use, that is until he refused to help a wounded Iraqi solider. He told his commanding officers that he will not treat enemy combatants but his officials said that as long as he wears the red cross, he helps everyone. Steven went AWOL.
Years later when Flint and Recondo were helping some rebel freedom fighter in South America, they came across Steven helping the allied rebels with his medical abilities. Recondo noticed that they tattooed him with their "mark". Recondo and Flint brought him back to the USA where they, after much debate, convinced the army to let GI JOE take care of him. They agreed and they gave him the code name "Doc" to honor his father. Steven hates Cobra and still refused to help any of them if they are wounded.
