Veteran of a dozen wars, Nicholas Fury was SHIELD's primary field operative prior to an attack on SHIELD High Command by renegade members of the defunct Weapon X program. Fury took leadership or SHIELD and formed the Ultimates by presidential mandate. The purpose of the team is to protect the US from superhuman and mutant terrorist actions.

Fury lost his eye during Desert Storm, when his Weapon X convoy was ambushed. He was rescued by Wolverine, the mutant killing machine the team was transporting, which resulted in Fury feeling obligated to assist Wolverine when asked. this has lead to close connections between SHIELD and the X-Men.
