Paul Duval was hired by Cobra Commander in an effort to reverse some transmutations that had taken place in his war with Cobra-La. Grey Gargoyle, as he is more commonly known, accepted the commission but was not prepared for the mysticism involved. He put on a good show for a bit and milked Cobra's fangs for all the money he could, but eventually he saw the writing on the wall. Turning more Cobra Troopers to stone, he made his escape in a Stellar Stiletto and escaped orbit with sacks full of money. Realizing all too late that they were Commander Bucks, the money was completely useless outside of Cobra Island. Out of fuel and adrift among the stars, Grey Gargoyle thought he might need to get back to his original quest for immortality.
