General Hawk retired from GI Joe with the one condition; that Duke fill his role. Duke did not want to take the job, insisting that his place was on the battlefield with a weapon in his hand and his fellow soldiers at his side. Hawk was persistent and convinced Duke that he could do more good with the higher position. Duke accepted and he has been responsible for the more focused reorganization of GI Joe.

Duke realized that GI Joe membership had grown out of hand and remembered that missions were more easily handled by the small team of specialists in the early days. He has since broken GI Joe into smaller teams with individual specialties that can called in when they are needed.
